Liquid Heritage!

I took this photo a few years ago… on St Patrick’s Day. As a South African, living in Ireland, I couldn’t resist combining something representing the liquid heritage of both countries… you guessed… Guinness and Pinotage… both winners. Remember… don’t mix them… you’ll be rather ill if you attempted to drink that concoction!

Cook, Cook and Braai!!

Gosh, this blog has been dormant for so long that I’ve almost forgotten it exists. However, Ailsa’s challenge this week is “cook“… and her photos reminded me that she missed the South African angle. So, I’ll throw in a wee gallery to assist… past braais, past pleasure… great memories!!

Nostalgia?

There are days… and then there are days. Those days when you long for the days… yep, those days when days were days. Days when we long for the days of the past! All of those days… when we did things that now make us all teary-eyed and nostalgic… like a beach braai. Any South African will tell you that may be the ultimate outdoor experience. Only thing is… we’ve been living in Ireland for almost 16 years so that is a memory that only smells of the days when nostalgia was nostalgia. However… even in the wet and wonderful Ireland one can build nostalgia…

Happy 2016!!

As is the norm… as a Saffer, how about throwing a few bits of pork belly/ rib on the coals?? I mean… surely one can’t begin a new year without a decent feed? So… from me and mine, may your year be filled with pleasant eating experiences!!

Happy New Year!! May 2016 bring only joy and happiness!!

2016 New Year's day braai... why not? Even in Ireland!!

Merry Christmas!!

Our Christmas roasts coming on just fine… this year the weather hasn’t played along too well. It’s been raining all day… making the braaiing a tad more characterful! Oh well… it’s all pat of the fun! Anyway, the traditional legs of lamb and a smaller pork roast… because this year I’ve tried something new… my own ham, finished off on the braai! So… Merry Christmas… enjoy your day!

2015 Christmas braai roasts!! Can't be beaten!!

Connected???

Bread and berries… connected? How? I’m going to show you a few photos to get the ball rolling…

On the make... toasted sarmie... yum!

The makings of a toasted sandwich or two…

The beauty of berries... on a few levels!!

Berries in a bowl. Connected? Not on your life. How would the two mix? Essentially they can’t and don’t. Until you take a step back. No… don’t worry, I’m not going to suggest you put berries on your toastie.

Both are foodstuffs… both are the basics for something good. On this day both were being prepared in the same kitchen. My good lady was making brunch while I was cleaning the berries… to add into a few loaves. There’s another connection. The berries came about 100 kms. The grand-kids helped with the picking, in their own garden. So, as a reward, one of the loaves went back to where the berries originated.

That’s food for you… it connects people. It connects cultures. Yep, even when things look totally unrelated they can be connected. Now, I’m wondering… could a berry toastie be an option? Nice and warm… with a dollop of rum and raisin ice cream splodged on top??

Summer berry loaf... too hot to handle... too good to pass by!!

The Humble Pork Chop

I’ve spent many hours in the past working on the food and photos to accompany a post for this blog. However, I’m prone to forget about my good intentions until a weekly photo challenge arrives on a Friday afternoon. The title for this post has been sitting dormant since early in the month.

So, why not show you a gallery and tie it to this week’s challenge? After all, you’ll have to agree with me, if you’ve enjoyed a simple yet great feed then you must surely have had a good day! (The photos are sequential so click on them for the captions, from left top onward!)
